News Release - Rail Freight Consultation

Rail Freight consultation underway

The public consultation for the Hinckley National Rail Freight Interchange has started.

Tritax Symmetry's consultation on their Rail Freight Interchange proposals will now be open for residents to have their say over the next eight weeks. Information can be found at, and comments can be made until Wednesday 09 March 2022.

The formal consultation from Tritax Symmetry sets out the plans, which include Industrial and Storage/Distribution units and a rail port with access from Junction 2 of the M69. The site is within the boundaries of Blaby District Council and Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, and is located south-west of the village of Elmesthorpe.

Blaby District Council is a statutory consultee and will not be deciding the application. Due to the size of the proposed development it is classed as a "Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project" and any decision will be made by the Secretary of State for Transport.

As well as a website, the developers will also be holding a number of public events for people to take a look at the plans and talk to Tritax Symmetry representatives. These events are planned to be held both in public and virtually, depending on any potential Covid-19 restrictions.

Councillor Terry Richardson, Leader of Blaby District Council, said: "Today is the day that residents can take a look at these plans in detail and have their say. We know the scale and size of the Hinckley National Rail Freight Interchange is concerning for many residents and that's why it is vital that people engage with this consultation.

"We are urging everyone to look at the information and share this with those you know in the community. We have been consistently clear with Tritax that they should share as much information as possible, and in this respect I can advise you that your Councillors have already asked numerous questions to which we are awaiting an urgent response.

"In addition we want to reiterate that whilst we will not be deciding any application, significant work till take place over the next year and more, reviewing the plans and offering our own detailed responses to Tritax and the Planning Inspectorate."
